THE OLACSIANS STUDENTS NEWS & STUDENTS VIEWS

The New OLACSians!

Posted June 6, 2016

Rachellou H. Arandia

We are the OLACSians who will serve and do the responsibilities as an OLACSian. We will do our job to give information in our school. Our work is dedicated in honor of our blessed mother. We will give information to my fellow OLACSians. We are inspired by our Christian faith of Mary to do our duty with a holistic perspective of transforming a just and humane Filipino society. We are dedicated in publishing the happenings in OLACS that will give information to my schoolmates for them to be updated.

VISION

OLACSian envisions to be the source of excellence in gathering, dissemination, and facilitation of news and information through multiple platforms.

MISSION

OLACSian is a school paper designed to inspire and involve students in forming    quality information providing transparent news and eloquent views.

Inside News

It is written in the Book of Ecclesiastes 3:1:”There is an appointed time for everything under the heavens…” Yes, the time spent at school can very well be one of those appointed moments in one’s life.

As a  student, the years of studies are times to accumulate and gain precious knowledge. After all, one of the greatest gifts a person could receive from his parents is EDUCATION.

The School Year 2017-2018, for us at Our Lady of the Abandoned Catholic School and the rest of the schools affiliated with the Diocese of Parañaque Parochial Schools Association (DOPPSA) is a time of transition. At first Semester, School Directors were moved and assigned to other DOPPSA Schools. As your new School Head, this movement has enabled me to journey anew.

So far, Since July 03, 2017, our date of transfer, my experience in OLACS can be characterized as challenging and meaningful.

My dear students may your journey in OLACS be filled with rich and joyful memories from fruitful memories of learning as you progress from being toddlers to be more mature boys and girls. Move forward, guided by your dreams. Look ahead, the future awaits you.

May Our Lady of the Abandoned be your inspiration. May she guide you and keep you under her loving hands.

In  Christ Jesus,

Rev. Fr. Jerico H. Habunal, MAEd

                                                                           School Director

Director’s Message

The School Year 2017 – 2018 is indeed an interesting year for us as we live in a world that is continually in transition.

The institution started the year with the annual retreat to ask God to bring the grace and inspiration needed to create synergy in OLACS because definitely change will continue to be ushered in our midst. Our theme, “In BECs, we live in communion towards transformation and mission” is like a vision to remind us of what we are aiming for, to work hard and invigorate us to go for life and give our best. We welcomed our new school director, Rev. Fr. Jerico H. Habunal, who communicated to us a leadership that likewise facilitates further change. This is important, because it encourages us to grow to become an engaged community that is willing to be of service as one family of OLACSIANS, brothers and sisters to one another in Christ.

Congratulations to all who contributed towards the promotion of an institution responsive to the demands of the 21st century education . Together we have embarked on the increased use of technology,  found ways to enrich creativity and innovation, while providing formation in valuing, teamwork and cooperation. Participation in different activities in and out of campus be it in sports, music and art demonstrates enthusiasm and joy of learning. As we embark in the journey of providing Senior High School, OLACS will continue to grow as a premier center of  education in Muntinlupa City. .

God Bless Everyone!

New Footsteps

Tyron Soy C. Seculan

As the first day of school begins, new and old footsteps enter the gate. Old students, new students, all are welcomed to be a part of the families in our school. Many students took long on finding their names on the list. Old students try to find their friends. These were the first moments of the first day.

As time goes by, the school lobby was clustered by groups of students who were talking about their experience in the summer break away from school. Then the first flag ceremony for the school year 2017-2018 happened. Now that all has lined up for their respective places, morning ceremony started. After the ceremony, our past Rev. Father Jose P. Duabe, gave his welcoming remarks. After that, all the students went to their classrooms and started their journey.

Mass of the Holy Spirit

New School Year, New Blessings

By: Rosevelle Marie P. Peregrino

Last June 23, as an OLACSian, we had the Mass of the Holy Spirit for the opening of the school year 2017-2018. For welcoming, the whole OLACS community with the presence of the Lord and with our mass presider, Rev. Father Jose P. Duabe, we began our mass with the entrance song that was sung joyfully by the Glee Club Members.

As the mass starts, the whole OLACS community was energetic and participated in the mass and sang together with the Glee Club. After the mass, we had a short tribute and thanked Fr. Duabe for his 6 years in service as  parish priest and school director since he was going to be transferred to another parish. And the students returned to their respective classrooms.

New Director

By: Alyssa Anne C. Tomas

As we begin our school year 2017-2018, we also welcome our new school director, Rev. Fr. Jerico 'Jerry' Habunal. We always have to say 'good bye' to someone, someday. But as we say good bye, there will be someone who will come and feel welcomed. Most of us are clamouring for a new guidance and experience.

We all want the best for our school. We all want to have a great school year. Now, we can have it with our new school director. We, OLACSians are tremendously happy in welcoming him. As we welcome him, we also know the meaning of 'Integrity'. We let him know what traits OLACSians do have. (We shown him what OLACSians already have.) We began our SY: 2017-2018 with our new school director, who is very hands-on with regards our school.

Basic Ecclesial Community

Xandrea Zyrille M. Gonong

Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC), we, Olacsians, are volunteers and sharers, this is a way of building and sustaining relationships to others and as people of God. We, students, do this every Wednesday, 7:15-7:30am before classes’ starts. We are gathered together around the Word of God, striving to integrate our faith in our daily life, also in solidarity with one another, making action. In a word to evangelize others and at the same time to be evangelized, because his words and message in the Gospel serves as an inspiration and norm of behavior and action. We, Filipinos, aren’t just person-oriented but also spirit-oriented because together, we are witnessing the Gospel. The Kingdom of God is not only about praying and sharing, but it’s a mixture of love, reflection of life and specially expressing and making your faith to God stronger. After the reading and sharing, it’s time for praying, pray not only because you need something but because we, people of God, have a lot to be thankful for.

“God is my Salvation; I will Trust and not be Afraid”

Assumption of Mary

By: Xandrea Zyrille M. Gonong

 We OLACSians, celebrated this

Feast in our First Friday Mass on

August 15, 2017. The Feast of the

Assumption of Mary celebrates

the Christian belief that the Virgin

Mary assumed into heaven following

her death. It is celebrated on or around

August 15 inother countries. The Most

Blessed Virgin Mary, when the course

of her earthly lifewas completed, was

taken up into the glory of heaven body

and soul. It is fitting that Jesus would uniquely honor his mother by preserving her from the corruption of the grave and by glorifying her body in heaven before the general resurrection of the body for all the other saints all day.

These are symbolic images of the Virgin Mary: Blue is the most or typical color connected to Virgin Mary, symbolizes truth, clarity and, it is the color of the sky which symbolizes heaven, and which symbolizes purity, chastity and simplicity. This is the fitting that Jesus would uniquely honor His Mother, truly the Mother of God by glorifying her body in heaven before the general resurrection of the body for all the other saints on the last day. Let us all celebrate this feast together.

Opening of Clubs

By: Alyssa Anne C. Tomas

As we begin our school year 2017-2018, we also apply the saying 'Learning while having fun'. As we opened the clubs, we, students are so happy to finally go to the club where we wanted to be, to test our skills and to see what we can do more. While learning and developing our skills, we can also have some fun. It is so nice that in our school, there are clubs. These clubs can be our 'process of learning'. In academics, we cannot just learn inside our classrooms, but we can also learn in the club that we chose. Being in a club is not just learning about academics, it is also learning about how we interact with our schoolmates and moderators.

By that, moderators can see and know what the hidden talents/skills of their students are. Our school didn't open the clubs for nothing. They opened it for us, students, to value our skills and knowledge, to know where we are good at and to where we are not so good at. Some of the students chose the club where they are not good at, because they wanted to improve on that certain skill nor subject and see what they can do more. And the other students chose where they are really good at, so that they can focus on their skills and prove what they can do. But at the end of the day, what's important is: You learned something from what you chose and did and you had so much fun.

The Importance of the National

Nutrition Month

By: Kyla Mae V. Hidalgo

Why do we celebrate an event called “The National Nutrition Month”? Because in this celebration, we are all learning on how to be healthy. People should stay healthy for them to avoid illness, viruses, diseases, and many more. Some people have many ways in keeping themselves healthy. Just like us, we do basic things in keeping ourselves healthy like brushing our teeth three times a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner), take a bath/shower every day, take the right amount of rest or sleep, and drinking lots of water (8-10 glasses a day).

Here in OLACS, we celebrated the “National Nutrition Month” with several activities like the Baking Contest and Nutri Quiz Bee for the Junior High School, Sandwich Making Contest and the Drawing and Coloring Contest for the Elementary Department, and for all Grade Levels, we did Zumba Dancing lead by the Theater Arts Club. We did these activities during our National Nutrition Month to remind us all about health. Our theme for this year is “Healthy Diet Gawing Habit for Life”.

All of us stay healthy to improve our immunity and strength. We should have a proper meal every day so that we can gain energy for us to do our work or tasks properly. If we take care of ourselves properly, then our body will be strong and will be able to handle diseases. People may have their own lifestyle of being healthy, but we should all do our daily activities and stay healthy as we are. Always keep in mind that being healthy is a way of

Mahalagang Pag-uugali: PAGPAPAKUMBABA

June Irish C. Genoso

Interview with the New Teachers

      By: Jamie Eunice O. Suitado

Question #1

What is your first impression of your colleagues?

Ms. Nolasco: Actually, I thought that they were the serious type, but then we have to have a side that entertains the students, not simply learning, so I saw that side of them too.

Sir  Viñas: They are nice and …… Yes! All the positive things.

Ms. Valeriano: They’re fun to work with! I knew that I would be having fun from then on.

Ms. Esperas: They are very nice.

Ms. Abad: They have colorful personalities, I had a hard time adjusting but now were simply colleagues, that have fun together.

Ms. Dionela: They were so welcoming they had welcomed us so nicely, in other schools they always keep us odd- person out.

Sir Abir: Very Nice. That first impression hasn’t worn off.

Ms. Tuzon: Honestly, I thought they were strict.

Ms. Portugal: They are very welcoming.

Question #2

Where there times that God tested your faith?

Ms. Abad: When my father died, I asked the Lord “Lord, what is the reason? Why did you take dad?” that was when I felt helpless. But I kept my faith in God. I focused on my studies.

Sir Viñas: During my 1st year or 3rd year college, I noticed that there are so much chaos and suffering, and I think I was blaming the one who created everything, that’s why I considered myself as non-believer back then but during my 4th year through the help of my classmates, I believed in God and until this moment, I’m a Catholic.

Ms. Valeriano: Wala naman.

Ms. Dionela: More on Family problems.

Ms. Esperas: When I didn’t pass the board exam, I was so devastated and I was down for a long time. I lost trust in God then. Now, I love God. I’m a teacher and I share my knowledge with students.

Sir Abir: Wala naman.

Ms. Tuzon: I haven’t had a faith questioning experience.

Ms. Portugal: I haven’t had any of those experience.

Question #3

Aside from being a teacher what would be your other vocations?

Ms. Dionela: Actually, wala naman.

Ms. Nolasco: Wala.

Sir Viñas: Yes! I want to be a scientist! I want to be an Environmental Scientist!

Ms. Valeriano: Catechism.

Ms. Abad: Believe it or not I have a Theater Group.

Sir Abir:  I have a Chorale CPLMUN.

Ms. Esperas: Wala naman.

Ms. Tuzon: I have no other vocation aside from teaching.

Ms. Portugal: Aside from teaching? None.

Question #4

What was charming about OLACS? What attracted you here?

Ms. Nolasco: Because in OLACS, it is a church centered school, I know that the students here are very gifted when it comes to learning and they’re really different among other students from other schools. I know that they are intelligent, So I chose to share my experience as a teacher here.

Sir Viñas: The calling just came to me, that I want to educate when it comes to environmental awareness because most of them do not know how to take care of the environment.
